This is my go-to machete every time…. Cold Steel’s black coating does prevent rust (but don’t lose it in the leaves and litter!) the blade is thicker and thus more durable than a thinner (albeit excellent) Tramontina blade… and the edge is easily sharpened with a few file strokes to field sharp (paper-cutting sharp but not so fine you mess up your edge hitting rocks, wire, etc). On top of which the kukri shape has immense chopping power that is somewhat magical, like a sharp Tramontina but with more heft to easily go clean through 1″ soft-wood branches with 1 hack. I thought I’d prefer my regular Cold Steel kukri machete for every day use – it’s shorter and doesn’t have as pointy a tip (less hazardous among vines & thickets!) – but, no, the added heft, reach and power of the CS “royal” kukri machete is awesome… it makes a ringing “zing” sound as it cuts through soft woods, and hard woods like oak, it chops like a hatchet!
Now, for chopping out roots a hatchet is better – more meat on the blade to take dirt, rocks, and other nicks, and easier to focus the chop on a tight, small area – but for everything up to cutting 5″ branches, this machete is an amazing tool, the physics and good CS steel are working with you…

It’s a versatile tool and a complete package. Thicker blade stock allows hard use for camping or agriculture and the kukri blade shape makes it an outstanding chopping tool. The handle is easily modified for comfort and fit. Came sharp enough for garden use and was easy to sharpen.
