When I received this knife, it was covered in a tan film meant to keep moisture off the blade. This came off very easily. The black finish is something like painted on, and it had blisters that had popped, allowing some surface rust to develop. However, I don’t care, its a working machete. It came with a decent grind for being South American, and it sharpens easily. The tip is fairly sharp, and I like the heft. It is wider and girthier than the 12″ Tramontina, and chops better. It is not really front heavy compared to some machetes I’ve had. The good balance makes it more comfortable to use for extended periods.
The handle is comfortable. This is first impressions, I haven’t used it extensively yet, and I don’t know yet how the edge reacts to strain (if it dents, chips or rolls). However, based on very basic preliminary use, I would recommend it over the Tramontina. It is shorter, heavier, less flexible, and to me, therefore, more handy.
