The Cold Steel 17 Inch Magnum Kukri Machete is engineered for those who require maximum chopping power and durability in a machete. This “Magnum” version extends the already impressive capabilities of Cold Steel’s Kukri Machete, providing a longer blade that excels at clearing large swaths of dense vegetation, hacking through thick branches, and performing heavy-duty bushcraft. Its design ensures that every stroke delivers a deep, effective cut, making tough chores significantly easier.

Key Features:

  • Blade Material: Primarily constructed from tough 1055 High Carbon Steel. Some current production models may utilize 65Mn Carbon Steel, both chosen for their resilience, ability to hold a sharp edge, and spring temper, which helps them withstand bending and impact.
  • Blade Finish: Features a durable, baked-on matte black anti-rust finish. This coating provides excellent corrosion resistance and a non-reflective surface, ideal for demanding outdoor environments.
  • Blade Design: A substantial 17-inch kukri-style blade, characterized by its distinctive forward curve and expanded “belly” near the tip. This weight-forward design maximizes leverage and delivers exceptional chopping and slashing power. The blade features a full tang construction, extending through the handle for superior strength and durability under heavy impact.
  • Handle: Equipped with a textured, hard polypropylene handle. This material is chosen for its ruggedness, resistance to chipping or cracking, and its ability to provide a secure and comfortable grip, even in wet conditions, thereby reducing hand fatigue during prolonged use. It typically includes a lanyard hole for added security.
  • Sheath: Comes with a sturdy black Cor-Ex sheath (often referred to as Cordura in descriptions, indicating the robust fabric type). This durable sheath ensures safe storage and transport of the large blade and features a reliable belt loop for convenient carrying in the field.
  • Dimensions:
    • Blade Length: 17 inches (approximately 43.2 cm)
    • Overall Length: Approximately 22 inches (around 55.9 cm)
    • Blade Thickness: Generally around 0.08 to 0.11 inches (2.0 mm to 2.8 mm).
  • Weight: Weighs approximately 18.2 to 20.1 ounces (around 516 to 570 grams). While a larger machete, its balance is optimized for efficient swinging without being overly cumbersome.
  • Performance: Supplied with a sharp utility edge from the factory, it is capable of being sharpened to an even finer edge for precision tasks. It is designed to “bite” deep with every stroke, making it highly effective for heavy chopping, clearing dense brush, and processing wood.
  • Country of Origin: Often manufactured in South Africa or China.

Important Note: The Cold Steel 17 Inch Magnum Kukri Machete is built for serious work. Consistent cleaning, drying, and occasional sharpening are recommended to maintain its peak performance and longevity.

First and foremost this is a machete, it is not designed or marketed as a bushcraft tool. So I would agree with the previous review, it is not for youtube videos of complex wooden traps and intricately carved joints of over engineered shelters. The pointy tip is indeed light but the belly of the blade is quite heavy and this easily chopped down several Mulberry 1.5-2″, some similarly sized cherry and b/walnut. Cleared dozens of wisteria vines .5-2″. Than I cut down two Myrtles one dead at about 8″ and another green around 6″. Sure it’s not an axe but it outcut my Condor mini duku by far. It cuts way beyond it’s price and sustained little damage when chopped into the ground at roots. A great beater machete.
I actually cut off the tip and fashioned the end similar to the duku or Aussie. Made it more balanced (still don’t understand ppl thinking it’s not blade heavy)
If you want a machete that’s better at chopping heavier brush but still can do light brush and not be overkill this is great. It came fully sharpened, sheath is nice enough. Now I bought this for my property but I wouldn’t hesistate to pack it if I was looking for a machete to camp with. It will easily fill all logical and legal tasks in the U.S.
If you are looking to whack it through logs like youtube who knows. I have built more campfires than I could hope to remember and not once did I split the wood or cut it all neatly to a specific size. Grip is nice and solid, if you have office hands than you may want gloves. Blade sharpens well and cuts deep. Put that poor Condor to shame, ended up throwing away the duku in disgust. Want machete to be machete=buy. Want to use machete as protractor=no

The balance is wrong for any type of bushcraft. It is tip light causing serious wrist impact.
